Since the polar ends of the phospholipid is hydrophilic (water loving), and the non-polar end of the phosholipid is hydrophobic (water hating), the molecule orients itself into layers into a double layer called a bilayer such that the hydrophobic ends are on the inside of the layer, and the hydrophilic ends are on the outside of the bilayer.
